Mexborough Club Struck Off
An amazing state of affairs was described when an application was made at Doncaster on Tuesday for the striking off the register of the Labour Club, Mexboro’, Willie Wheatley, secretary, appeared for the club.
Supt. Huddlestone said the club had ceased to exist “Apparently, they have got themselves into a terrible mess. They owe large sums of money to various breweries and have other debts, such as rent and rates.”
The magistrates’ clerk, (Mr. Pettifer) to defendant: “You exhausted your supplies with one brewery; went to another and did the same, and so on. Why was that done?
Defendant: I cannot say. It was before I was appointed secretary. That was in 1932.
Mr. Pettifer: Did you not make inquiries after appointment? – We thought the club would make a turn for the better.
Who was the treasurer? – The bank, I did not know how the club was actually fixed.
But the bank made some statements surely? – I believe they came every month.
You got all this beer. Where did the money go from the sale of it? – I cannot say. The steward took the takings to the bank.
Who paid the steward? – He kept his wage from the takings.
I should think he did. You owe about £450 for beer What bank balance is there? – About £1 14s
The club was struck off and the premises disqualified for twelve months.
