Mexborough ‘Chin-Wag’ in New Zealand when “Times” Arrives

When the South Yorkshire Times arrives in Devonport, New Zealand, it is the occasion for a “get together” by a little Mexborough colony there. Writes Mrs. E. M. King (nee Edith Gill) (picture) of Shoal Bay Road, Devonport, “You get a lot of news in your paper. The Misses Venables that were, and I, when we get together have a “chin-wag” about our old birthplace and the people we knew.”

Mrs. King adds: “Although I have been in New Zealand 30 years, Mexborough will always have a soft spot in my heart.  We see a lot about Whitsuntide in the May issue, and it is most interesting. We are having our winter and it is very cold and wet to-day but in Auckland we do not get snow.  My daughter has never seen snow.”

Thirteen years old Judith King, the daughter, is a sportsgirl. Competing in her school 1950 swimming championships she won the girls’ dive, the 50 yards breast stroke, the girls back-stroke (for girls of 12 in 231-3rd secs|) and the schools champion of champions cup.   She holds two cups.

In the Cheltenham Harbour races Judith was third to Miss Bridson an Empire Games swimmer.

Mrs. King’s son, Mr. Cecil Aldis Armstrong Bush-King, has recently been married in New Zealand to Miss Joyce Ann Barnes, of Dunedin. The master of ceremonies was Mr. Alan Chester, husband of Mrs. Chester (formerly Miss Mabel Venables, of Mexborough).
