Mexborough Builder Dies at the Age of 65

Mr Frank Smith, 62, Bank St, Mexborough, who assisted his father to build Mexborough Secondary School, Mexborough Hippodrome, Wath Wood Hospital, St George’s church, Mexborough many local schools, hotels and banks, died at his home on Tuesday at the age of 65.

The last contract he undertook before retiring about 10 years ago was the erection on the nurses hospital at the Montagu hospital.

Born at Conisbrough, Mr Smith came to Mexborough at an early age and started work with his father, Mr G H Smith who had premises at the Rock pottery, Mexborough.

He saw Swinton Parish Church rebuilt by his father after it was practically destroyed by fire in 1897, and assisted with extensions to Wombwell and Mexborough Parish Churches and the Montagu hospital.

Mr Smith came out of retirement at the commencement of the war and worked at Mexborough’s housing department as a stores clerk until last year.

He leaves a widow, two sons and two daughters.
