Mexborough have got together a side that looks good for big things in the Yorkshire Council competition this summer.

The men will be under new leadership and the appointment of Wilf Broadhead (picture) as captain should be popular one.

It is interesting – and perhaps significant of the times – that the two teams in one immediate neighbourhood, Swinton and Mexborough, will be captained by young men. Probably Price and Broadhead are the youngest captains in the Yorkshire Council.

The team’s weakness, if it has one, will be found behind the wickets; but the club are doing their best to get hold of a good wicket-keeper. Several good men have been approached but no definite announcement has been made yet.

Otherwise the side is strong all round. The bowling is reinforced by the addition of Laurie Burkinshaw; Palmer, a right arm fast man from South Wales; and Copeland, the Mitchell Main player.

Burkinshaw will also stiffen the batting, and the club are again having the services of young Bernard Senior, who was among those called to the Headingley nets.

Most of last season’s players are available, including Ralph Burkinshaw, David Brown, Tommy Hart, Tom ambler, Colin Kilner and Herbert Garner.

Also there is Reg Nicholson back to the team he formerly captained, after season at Denaby. Wadsworth, the Kilnhurst lad who made a few appearances last season and did good work as a bowler and a slip fieldsman is on the list again.

Altogether the team needs only a reliable wicket-keeper to make it the most formidable one got together at Mexborough for some years.
