Mexborough Athletic beat Frickley
Mexborough Athletic 4 Frickley 1
‘Wilson (2) and Bungay (2) scored for Mexborough, and Mundy got Frickley’s only goal. Mexborough were never extended, but Best showed confident form in goal behind two good backs in Annables and Greig.
The forwards were lively but not too sure near goal, though Davis played an excellent game. The halves were the only unsatisfactory line.
Frickley’s defence, after opening well, became uncertain. Newman worked hard at centre-half, and Wrigglesworth and Mundy were the best of moderate forwards.
Loughborough Corinthians 3 Denaby United 1
A feature of the match at Loughborough was the brilliant goalkeeping of Brannan, the Denaby goalkeeper, though the Corinthians won by 3-1.
Taylor, the visitors’ right back, played a great game, but the forwards were weak in front of goal. Loughborough deserved their victory.
Scorers; Loughborough, Hodgkinson, Dumclow and Taylor (own goal) ; Denaby, Barrett.
Mansfield’s Handicap.
Wombwell 6 Mansfield Town Res 1
Though outplayed, Mansfield Town Reserves put up a plucky light at Wombwell. For the first twenty minutes they had most of the play, but later their attack was disorganised through Bowater, the outside left getting injured. Half way through the second half he left the field.
Wombwell gave a very convincing display, and Auckland was again outstanding. The Murden brothers made an effective left wing, and Briggs, the new outside-right, was a success.
Mansfield lacked pace, but their outside-right, Small, was clever. Goal-scorers : Harvey (3), Murden (E.) (2), and Briggs for Wombwell; Jepson for Mansfield.
