Mexborough – and Broadhead’s – best
A splendid afternoon’s cricket was provided at Mexborough on Saturday when Hull were the visitors. Mexborough made their highest total in the Yorkshire Council match, and perhaps, but for time, would have won.
The fielding was keen throughout – so keen at times that it was remarkable collisions were avoided – and the returns were commendably smart.
Crawford was Hull’s main bowler, but at the start he was treated almost with contempt. He got Laurie Burkinshaw easily, but Bernard Senior and Wilfred Broadhead then made a fine partnership of 94 for the second wicket. The scoring was fast. 50 went up in 35 minutes, and the hundred in 65 minutes. Senior gave a very difficult chance when he had scored 22 runs, in the slips off Crawford. Broadhead batted splendidly and gave no chance. He scored freely on both sides of the wicket reached his century in two hours and 15 minutes out of 226.
The only thing that marred the brilliant Mexborough innings was the lack of understanding in running between the wickets. Several times Broadhead and Senior were nearly run out, and the same thing occurred when Kilner joined Broadhead. Mexborough’s declaration left Hull with two hours and 20 minutes batting.
A feature during the whole innings was a brilliant slick fielding of Ralph Burkinshaw at third man, and he took three clever catches. The last of them, off Ambler was especially good. It was a rising ball which Voase sneaked and Burkinshaw jumped and held the ball in one hand.
Hull scored quickly but were helped at the start by the large number of extras. Of the first 38 runs 17 were extras.
