Mexborough’s Surprise Defeat

Hargreaves’ Fine Innings

Mexborough were surprisingly defeated by eight wickets by Doncaster Town at Hampden Road on Monday.

Mexborough batted first, and were dismissed for 160. Tom Hargreaves, their veteran player. was mainly responsible for this, Scoring a fine 88. The only other double figure men were D. Brown (14) and A. S. Vollans (12).

An opening stand of 107 by Smith (56) and Alberry (51 not out) put Doncaster well on the way to victory. Hutchinson also scored 44 not out.

For Doncaster, Burton took four for 60 and Musson two for 22.

Consistent Playing

Gives Brampton Victory

Consistent playing enabled Brampton to beat Wath by 86 runs on Saturday. Six of the Brampton batsmen reached double figures in their total of 160. G. Taylor (31) and R. Denton (15) opened confidently, to be followed by J. Wardle (22) and a sixth wicket stand of 32 by F. Varney (17) and C. Birch- Snore (31).

Wath made many lapses in the field, and their most successful bowlers were Beecham (four for 30), Wilson (two for 22), Sage (two for 40) and Fieldsend (two for 45).

Good bowling by Wardle (five for 22) assisted by H. Winch (two for 26) and G. Taylor (two for 11) dismissed Wath for 74 (C. Sage 13, J. Ison 19. H. Clarke 11).

Missed Catches

Lose Rockingham the Game

Weak fielding by Rockingham resulted in their being beaten by three wickets by Swinton on Saturday.

Batting first, the home team made a good start, F. Melling (46) and P. Fisher (20) putting on 51 for the first wicket, before the latter was dismissed. The next three wickets fell for the addition of five runs. J. Ivill then joined Melling and carried the score to 92, but with the dismissal of Melling, the next four wickets added only nine runs. F. Morrell (28) and G. A. Grant (18) put on 41 for the ninth wicket, and the innings closed at 147.

For Swinton, J. Briscoe took three for 31, and J. Eniss three for 38.

Early in the innings, Swinton lost W. B. Broadhead, but H. Bedford and G. Barnett carried the score to 65, before the latter was bowled by Fisher for 28. In his score of 93. Bedford hit six sixes and six fours. Fisher then took two Swinton wickets in successive sad would have completed the hat trick but for the fact that a catch from his third ball was badly missed. Five catches were missed in two overs. Swinton scored 150 for seven wickets.
