Mexboro’ 128 Nether Hallam Rangers 71
The following match was played on the Mexboro’ ground last Monday. A moderate number of spectators attended to watch the play, which was from beginning to end especially interesting.
The Mexboro’ captain winning the toss, went to the wickets, accompanied by Jenkinson, and a treat followed. Both batsmen became fairly set, and no attempt on the bowlers’ part could effect a change. Many fresh bowlers were tried, but to no purpose, until 57 had been placed on the board, and Jenkinson was caught by France off Asquith, after playing splendidly for 28, which included two 4’s. (1 for 57). Bennett was in capital form and played well for his 26. Hutchinson next followed and scored 13. Lewis was unfortunately run out after carefully obtaining 7. Nicholson was in excellent form and played a good innings for 21. Searah as usual obtained double figures in his usual free & careful manner. Wilson and Axe added to the trio of “run outs.” Swallow and Sykes brought up the near by obtaining conjointly the honours of “spectable,” leaving A. Raynor to carry out his bat for 3. The innings closed for 128. A good score and well-earned, considering the quality of the bowling against which they contended.
The visitors were quickly to work, being represented by Wheatcroft Bros., not long elapsed before a change took place, and the first wicket fell for 2. The next two batsmen quickly retired, and singularly to state the first three players were all caught by Lewis. Asquith, the champion of the visitors, played a good innings for 21. The total innings closed for 71. The bowling of Bennett and Lewis was perfection itself; and it is owing to their excellent work that the result of the match was so favourable. The fielding of both sides was really good, and in all respects clean. The Mexboro’ players were particularly active, and throughout their playing were frequently applauded. Score:—
