Denaby Win First of The Season’s ‘ Derbies’
Peter Elkins, the Denaby and Cadeby all-rounder, played an important role in his team’s five wickets victory over Mexborough at Hampden Road on Monday. After taking 6 for 28 he then went out to knock 34 in an opening partnership of 43 with Arthur Ellis.
Mexborough made a disastrous start. Davis faced up to the first over from Dick Lawley and after playing at and missing the first two balls he just got an edge to the third ball and was well caught by Cory.
But Davis’s dismissal was a prelude to a big stand between Hemstead and Beldon. The latter batted very confidently and Denaby’s bowling took some punishment at this stage. The score bowled along merrily and Beldon who had his “eye in,” thrashed the Denaby bowlers to all parts of the field.
However, at 75 Beldon was caught by Newton for 46, including six fours, Without a run being added Cromack followed him to the pavilion and five runs latex Hill was caught by Hirst off Pearson,
Hempstead, the number two batsman, was next to go at 85, when he had scored 28. Of the other batsmen only Vickers reached double figures and the innings concluded with Mexborough out for 116. Lawley had taken 2 for 37 and Pear 2 for 25.
Good Start
The Denaby innings was given a big send off by Ellis and Elkins but after Ellis’s dismissal Jones received a knock and had to retire, hurt. Downing was soon bowled by Hydes but then in came Norman Oakley, and he batted confidently and forcefully — seeing Elkins. Cory and McDonald all go at the other end. When the Denaby innings concluded at 117 for five Norman had made 42. including five fours and a six.
Hyde had bowled very well for Mexborough and in eight overs had taken 4 for 53.
