A Draw at Mexboro’

Mexborough  1  Castleford  1

Mexborough ought to have won the match home on Saturday, though it would have been eleventh hour victory. From the early stages of the game it was apparent to all that there was going to be a big tussle, and although Mexborough took the load in the first half through a penalty which was netted by Smelt, Castleford spared no efforts to avoid giving Mexborough another chance. The home forwards worked splendidly together, and they worried the visitors’ defence unceasingly. Throughout the second half both teams played spirited football, and it looked as though Mexborough, who wore exerting every nerve and sinue to keep the lead, would succeed in doing so.

About 10 minutes off time, Lynch broke through the home defence and equalised matters. Just before the finish a corner awarded to Mexborough, and Redfearn made an hopeless to attempt centre. Once twice in the concluding stages of the game were Mexborough given the chance, but there was nothing doing, and the match ended in draw.

The game was considered to be one of the best ever seen the ground, while the crowd, which numbered over four thousand, reminded one of days that are gone.

Undoubtedly football in Mexborough has taken on new lease.
