Watch and Money
Mexboro’ Theft Charge
Leonard Powell, a Mexborough fitter, was fined 40s. at Doncaster on Wednesday on charge of stealing a watch valued at 30s., and 2a. 6d. in money belonging to Peter Wray, a shot firer, of Chaucer Road, Mexborough, on May 27th.
He denied the charge. Wray said Powell called to Bee him on the night in question, and the watch and money were on the mantelpiece. He had occasion to go upstairs and defendant was alone in the room. He missed the watch and money next day and after making a search informed the police and was shown the watch later by Pc. Battarbee.
Replying to the defendant, he denied that he sold him the watch for 3s.
P.c. Batterbee said at first defendant denied all knowledge of the watch, but later said he bought it for 3s. from complainant but he had never seen the half-crown.
Defendant protested that paid complainant for the watch and called a witness who said defendant told him he had bought it from the complainant on Monday night, May 23rd
Defendant had been previously convicted.
