Mexboro’ Marine’s Ordeal.

Private Herbert Atkinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Atkinson, 5, Helena street, Mexboro’, has been serving ‘with the Royal Marine Light Infantry for two years.

He is 18 years of age, and before enlistment was a pupil at the Mexboro’ Secondary School.

Recently the vessel to which he is attached was torpedoed, but was safely towed into port. Private Atkinson behaved very well in an emergency, and held a water-tight door in position for eighteen hours.–an uncommon feat of endurance.

The captain commended him and gave him a present.

He has been home on special leave, but has now rejoined his ship.
