Return of Shaw.

Mexboro’ 4, Staveley 1

The game at Mexboro’ on Saturday was interesting, but play did not reach a very high standard. Play was fast at times, but Mexboro’ were the better team. They attacked in splendid fashion and their halves played a real good game. Kennedy put in some useful work but a dry ground and a light ball are useless to him, and he was a bit too slow. Mexboro’ tried Lee at right back, and he was quite safe.

Staveley played a good game and it was notuntil well into the second half that they were outplayed. They certainly were outplayed towards the finish but until then play was even.

The first goal was scored just before the interval by SHAW, who played a great game and kept the Mexboro’ forwards working in a smart manner. Newton put in a good corner and Shaw shot into the net from a crowd of players.

LYALL scored for Staveley after about 20 minutes in the second half, after Booth had shot and Bromage partly saved, but Lyall was waiting to tap the ball in. The goal would probably not have been scored but for a mis-kick by Dayies.

About two minutes later SHAW gave Mexboro’ the lead, again from a corner after Crookes had fisted out. A minute later SHAW scored a third for Mexboro’ and completed his hat trick.

Shortly afterwards BRIGGS scored a fourth with a hard shot from close in.
