Life Card.

To mark 50 years’ membership of the Amalgamated Union of Building Trades Workers, Ur. George K, Burchby, of 16, Auckland Road, Mexborough, is to be presented with a life membership card. When Mr. Burchby, now 76, joined the union in September 1900, the union was the old London Order of the Operative Bricklayers’ Society. Mr. Burchby, who is now in the Mexborough branch of the union was one of its founders.

He was born at Tickhill, and first joined the Sleaford (Lincs.) branch and was president there for three or four years. He came to Mexborough 40 years ago, helped to found the Mexborough branch, and has lived in Auckland Road ever since.

He has been a bricklayer all his life, retiring from work about ten years ago. His last job was with Mexborough Council, with whom he was foreman for 11 years, and before that he was with Messrs. A. Bull and Co., Thurnscoe. Up to about 1935, when he last held any office in the Mexborough branch, Mr. Burchby had been treasurer for about five years and president for 15 years.

Now, since his retirement, he mainly occupies himself with gardening. Mr. Burchby’s wife, Mrs. Sarah J. Burchby, died in March, 1949. He has two sons and a daughter.
