Licensee Retires

Mr. W. Brammer Leaves Mexbro’ Hotel

After spending 22 years as landlord of various public houses In Mexborough and Swinton, Mr. William Brammer of the New Masons Arms, Mexborough, has retired from the trade. His son-in-law, Mr. Arthur Robinson, is the new landlord of the New Mason’s Arms,

Mr. Brammer isĀ  a native of Mexborough. Born in the year 1897, he attended the National School and at the age of 13 went to work at Verity’s Waggon Works, where his father , Mr. Joseph Brammer worked as a waggon builder for nearly 30 years. He was then apprenticed as a blacksmith at Denaby Main Colliery, and worked there until December, 1925, when he took over the tenancy of the old “Golden Flitch” Inn, in Bank Street, Mexborough.

He was the last tenant of this house, and after spending three and a half years there went to the Don Hotel, Swinton, where he remained for three years, then taking an off-licence shop opposite the Don Hotel.

After a period of 18 months Mr. Brammer began his association with the Masons Arms, and the New Masons Arms, in September, 1933. He was tenant of the original Mason Arms and became landlord of the New Masons Arms, in October 1934, when the Masons Arms was rebuilt and renamed the New Masons Arms.

Mr. and Mrs. Brammer were married at Mexborough Parish Church in 1911 and have two children, Mrs. Ann Robinson, wife of the present tenant, and Mr. George Brammer.

Mr. Brammer during the war was a member of the Special Constabulary at Mexborough for four years. Mr. and Mrs Brammer are to live at “Holmleigh,” Doncaster Road Mexborough, in their retirement.
