Leaving Mexborough for Barnsley
Important New Post

Mr Walter P Marsdin, who has been manager of the Yorkshire Penny Bank since July 1919, on his discharge from active service, has been appointed manager of the Barnsley branch of the bank and will take up his new duties on July 1.

During his long stay at Mexborough Mr Marsdin has taken a prominent part in the social and sporting life of the area, and his departure will be regretted in many circles. Mr Marsd1n himself states that it will be a wrench to leave the Mexborough district when he has made so many friends.

During the war he served with the York and Lancaster Regiment and the West Yorkshires and attained the rank of Lieutenant (acting Captain).

Shortly after his arrival at Mexborough he was made chairman of the old Mexborough Football Club and when the Athletic Club came into being under the Miners Welfare scheme he continued as an official and is still a vice president and treasurer. He was largely instrumental in negotiating transfers from the Mexborough club of a number of players including Ashton to Barnsley, J Slicer to Huddersfield (when, on the toss of a coin he obtained £400 instead of £300), H Cope, Blackburn Rovers, F Varney, Notts Forest, S Davies, West Bromwich.

Under his chairmanship the club won the Midland League championship in 1925-26.
