Mexborough and Swinton Times September 20, 1919
Last of The Bennet Brothers -“Micky” Bennett.
“Tip,” “Cocky” and “Micky,”—three football names to conjure with.
Mexboro’ has turned out some splendid footballers, but we must always put the three Bennetts at the head of the list. Let us hope they are now playing on Elysian fields.
So “Micky” Bennett., the eldest of these clever brothers, has gone. None of them has made old bones. Harry and Walter died in their thirties, and though William was climbing up to sixty he was not old in any way, and but for his Army service, which aggravated his rheumatism, and generally weakened him, we might have , lad him with us for many a year, as our leading local football oracle.
“Micky” knew every trick and turn of the game. He played it when it was desperately hard sport, and none but the fittest survived. He is still remembered in Sheffield by the old cronies who gather at Owlerton on match days to mourn the good old days and the present decadent times. Sheffield Wednesday would not have gone through nearly a month of football without scoring a goal, if “Micky” had been leading their attack. That bullet, head of his could not only think out wonderful goals, but could score them.
A grand footballer, “Micky,” and a droll fellow. Peace to him.
