Mabel Squires, the daughter George Squires, grocer, Doncaster Road. Mexborough, left her bicycle on Monday outside the house of the Rev. Mr. McRow, Station Road. When she returned, it was missing.
Inspector Fairburn, of Mexborough, subsequently saw two miners named George Ford, Mexbro’. and Albert Jackson, Swinton, wheeling a lady’s cycle on the canal bank proceeding in the direction of Denaby.
He endeavoured intercept them, but did not succeed. Subsequently he found the men near the river Don at Conisbro . Ford was holding the bicycle, and the other man was taking off the gear case and lacing. Jackson said “I have given 10s. for it.”
Inquiries for the missing bievele were made by Policc-constable Shaw, of Swinton. who later received the men into custody from the Mexbro’ police.
At Rotherham West Riding Court yesterday Ford and Jackson pleaded guilty to the theft, but explained that they had been drinking. They were each sentenced to a month’s imprisonment.
