Important Sale at Mexborough – The Great & Little Leaches

Messrs. Thos. T. Cundy and Sons offered by auction at the Montagu Arms, Mexboro’, yesterday afternoon, several parcels of land known by the names of the Great and Little Leaches which are situated adjoining the river Don, the canal, and the M. S. & L. railway.

This property was divided into ten lots, containing altogether nine or ten acres.

Mr. Cundy, junr., described the property as offering very special advantages to intending purchasers, particularly manufacturers, on account of its proximity to the railway and canal, and as being the possible site of the proposed ship canal from Goole to Sheffield.

No. 1 lot, containing 2326 yards, was started at £10, and. knocked down at £22 to Mr. W. Roebuck ; lot No. 2, 3134 yards, fetched £20, Mr. Roebuck , lot No. 3, 3308 yards, fell to Mr. Roebuck for £20, as also did lot No. 4 ; lot No. 6, 2998 yards, £21, Mr. H. Waddington ; lot No. 6, 3554 yards, £17, Mr. W. H. J. Mills ; lot No. 7, 3805 yards, £45, Mr. Dykes ; lot No. 8, £25, Mr. Dykes ; and leots Nos. 9 and 10 (sold together), 4057 yards, were knocked down to Mr. Cundy, snr., for £65. Mr. Roebuck obtained three acre’s and a rood of land for £105. The total proceeds of this sale amounted to £380.

On the conclusion of the above sale Mr. H. Waddington offered for sale by auction a dwelling-house and shop, together with five cottages, with the out-offices belonging thereto, situate at the corner of Church street and Melton street, Mexboro’. The premises were built in 1878, and cover an area of 516 square yards. The first offer was £1,000, and after some desultory bidding the property was eventually knocked down, amid applause, to Mr. Cundy, acting on behalf of Mr. J. Lowe, Church street, Mexbero’, for £1,255.
