A Fall from Grace
Mexboro’ Lapse at Hull
Hull City 4, Mexboro’ 1
Mexboro’ fell from grace at Hull on Saturday, losing 4-1 and thus failing to emulate the feat of their neighbours, Denaby, who won on the ground a few weeks ago.
The defeat only vindicated a rather inconsistent side, however, for Hull’s team included a couple of youngsters in Moore and Pinkerton, both wingers destined for the second division team. Both players came up to expectations and the result was the discomfiture of the visiting team.
Mexborough began well enough but Hull gradually got a grip of the game and before the interval Moore and Atkinson had given them a useful lead.
Mexboro’ found themselves up against an unyielding defence in the second half and though Bolan did manage to get through before the end, Hull added two more goals through Moore and Atkinson. Fell played a sturdy game for the visitors and Winstanley and Wilbourne worked well together, while Wilkinson’s goal keeping was safe though men in front of him wilted.
Mexboro’s defeat was not so surprising as the extent of it in view of the recent improved displays of the defence.
