Home From The War
Mexborough Man Brings Italian Bride
A young Mexborough man returned to his native town on Friday from Italy with his Italian wife after working for a year with a private Italian company after his demobilistion in that country from the African Pioneer Corps, He is Mr. J. A. Cauwood, of 10, Lorna Road, Mexborough.
8th Army Man
Mr. Cauwood landed in Sicily with the 8th Army in 1943, moving to Italy the same year. In 1945 he met et Signorina Anna Maria Frega in Venice, and after his demobilisation in 1947 he married his Italian fiance at her home town of Riva-stir-Garda on Lake Garda near Triento, where her father was customs and excise officer. He worked in the town with an Italian who manufactured utility furniture for the British Govern-went as supervisor. Mr. Cauwood speaks fluent Italian and interpretsnfor his wife, who is learning English.
Before joining the Forces, Mr. Cauwood was employed by Mexborough and Swinton Gas Board. Talking to a ” South Yorkshire Times ” reporter on Wednesday he said he did not know whether he was going to return to Italy and had not made any plans in this respect.
Dark and attractive, Mrs. Cauwood told me, through her husband, that she likes the way we live over here, it is so different. What she cannot understand is all these rows of houses all of the same type. She had not had much of a chance to see anything of the country because of the fog, which also amazes her as she has never seen any before.
Our reporter asked Mr, Cauwood whether Italy was recovering from the war. ” They are getting back on their feet again,” he replied, “reconstruction is going on very well. There is no lack of food but there is still a great gap between poor and rich. The cost of living is dearer than here.” Talking of new cars and newspapers, Mr. Cauwood commented: “The Italian seem to be going mad over these “ items.
