Holiday Club Funds.

Former Mexborough Man to Make Restitution.

The surrender at Liverpool, on his return from Canada, of former secretary and treasurer of Mexborough Reform Working Men’s Club, had sequel at Doncaster yesterday, when Charles Alfred Morris, formerly employed a miner, and living Mexborough, was charged with having embezzled £9O belonging to the club.

He, was ordered to repay to the club £60 and pay £5 towards the costs of the prosecution, and was bound over for year

Mr. F. Allen, for the prosecution, explained that the prisoner should have paid the money received weekly – into the Yorkshire Penny Bank. Just before April 13th he disappeared, and it was found that he had not paid the whole of the money into the bank. He had paid £1 a 4 into the bank. The subscriptions and  receipts received from other sources; bazaars, etc., came to £32. Although certain amount of money was admitted, it did not cover the whole. He had cards showing the receipt of £52 5s. but he would accept the statement of the prisoner that the amount, he had received was £6O.

A warrant was issued for the prisoner’s apprehension and it was not executed until Saturday on the arrival of the prisoner by boat at Liverpool when he gave himself up.

Mr. W. L. Crawford, in defence, said that unfortunately it was one of those cases where men were put into certain positions without any practical knowledge of the duties. The prisoner was acting for four different funds connected with the club. The members of the club consisted of workers at the colliery who were putting money away to enable them to go to the Cup Final.
