Mexborough Secondary School
The Mexborough Secondary School, opened in 1910, after previously being carried on in rented premises in various parts of the town, is another institution which has greatly enhanced the prestige of the town. The present headmaster, Mr. H. L. Watkinson, succeeded Mr. T. W. Ireland, who had been head since the school was opened, in 1931, and the school’s brilliant record in examinations and other directions is being fully maintained under his leadership. Important extensions involving a cost of £24,000 have increased the accomoda-tion of the school which now caters for some 700 pupils.
Mexborough Athletic Ground
One amenity which the town possesses and which at present is coming into its own again, is the Athletic Ground.
Sixty years ago this site was covered by allotment gardens and was subsequently secured by the Mexborough cricket club who in 1923 handed over the property to the present Mexborough Athletic Club, formed to administer a grant of £10,000 from the Miners’ Welfare Fund.
Alterations to the ground were made by the expenditure of this sum, accommodation being provided for football, cricket, lawn tennis and bowls, with a children’s corner also. Unfortunately, Mexbrough, who have twice proved champions of the competition are now without a football team in the Midland League, the club being disbanded at the conclusion of the 1935-6 season.
