He’s Seeing the World
Gordon Rymer has been all over the world since joining the Royal Marines in September 1963 and he has just signed on for another five years. 24-year-old-Gordon, 39, Hampden Road, Mexborough, still has another two years of his first nine year contract to run and his obvious enthusiasm for his job is reflected by the keenness with which he has re-signed.
“It is really a great life. I love the travelling and have visited all corners of the world” he told the “South Yorkshire Times” this week. These include Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore, Aiden, Borneo, Cyprus, Italy, Kenya, Malaya, Penang, Ceylon, Holland, France, Norway, most other European countries and Thailand.
Fed up with routine
Before joining the marines Gordon worked in a garage in Mexborough and at Kilnhurst brickyard. Explains Gordon “I was fed-up with the routine. I wanted to do something different so I chose the Marines. I think the Marines provide a more interesting and varied life than the other Services. There are only 7,000 of them and there is a wide choice of hobbies and exercises. I enjoy ski-ing and parachuting more than anything else,” he said.
Gordon is now on what is known as signing on leave and is due to return to Plymouth on June 26th; his next foreign tour will take in the Orkney Isles, Holland and Denmark.
Four Albums
During the seven years which he has been in the Marines he has collected four albums of souvenirs and photographs of the places he has visited
