Hard Riding at the Crags as the Youth Club’s fight it out

What started as a 400 yard tussle between eight youth clubs driving their home-made vehicles down the Conisbrough Crags “Soap Box Derby” course on Saturday ended in a battle for honours between three teams.

Mexborough Youth Club fell victim to the inspector’s examination for roadworthiness, Conisbrough and Denaby, Swinton and Wath crashed midway down the course and Conisbrough Co-op Club failed to arrive.

The fifth annual “Derby”, arranged by the Mexborough Divisional Area Youth Sub Committee to provide a Club activity during the winter months in building the cars, was blessed by fine weather.

As Assistant Area Youth Officer, Mr Jack Makin gathered the cars together, Mr Albert Jackson of Mexborough Youth Club inspected the brakes and steering.

Awards

Three runs were attempted by each Club and five awards were presented after a gruelling hours of riding, by the Chairman of Conisbrough Urban Council, Councillor R.H. Shephard.

The award for the most attractive car was run by Wath Youth Club, who crashed on the first run, and it was received by David Cook and Martin Shaw. The runners-up award was received by Terry Whitehead and Eddie Baines for Tom Hill Youth Centre.

The prizes for the fastest single run (34 seconds) and the fastest aggregate time (34.4 seconds) plus the Club Shield (for the third year) went to W.J.F. Reeder for Ryecroft Methodist Church Youth Club’s ‘B’ team.
