Groundsman Leaves

Mr. Les Machin, groundsman at Mexborough Athletic Club for the last five years and well known throughout South Yorkshire sporting circles, left the club last week to take over the licence of the Union Inn. Doncaster Road. Before his appointment at the Athletic Club Mr. Machin was a surface worker at Manvers Main Colliery.

The biggest events at the club in Mr. Machin’s time were the two charity cricket               matches and the big gala held in the last two years. This season 94 cricket matches, including many for charity have been held. Mr. Machin has certainly left his mark on the ground which is in excellent condition. No successor of Mr. Machin has yet been appointed, and in the interim his son, Mr. Roy Machin, is carrying on the ground work and Mr. W. Browning of Hampden Road is looking after the canteen.

Mr. Machin, who is a sergeant in the local Home Guard, hopes he will not have to sever his connections with the club. A presentation on behalf of his associates is to be made to him.
