It was a, too one-sided game at Blundell Park on Saturday to leave opportunity tor saying much about Mexhorough. They defended most of the time and got few chances. Not-withstanding the heavy score the defence was the best part of the team.
Burton kept a really good goal and on only one of the seven tinges when he was beaten was he at fault. That was the second goal. Burton caught the ball but let it slip through his hands. The greasy ball was the cause, and on such a. day a goalkeeper might be forgiven for a lapse of, that kind. The backs played pluckily and stubbornly but they had a thankless task.
As fast as they cleared the ball it was sent back to the other end, and they had to do their work all over again. The best man on the side was Hill (picture) , who showed stylish play its well as of stout resistance to the Grimsby left wing. Mexborough’ were poorest served forward. It was the weakness of the front line, which was unable to take a proper to take a proper share in the game, that accounted for the extent to which they were swamped.
As we had been faltering in their place since the New Year came in but he was Mexborough’s luck to strike them on a day when they found their feet – literally as well as figuratively. They adapted themselves much better to the heavy ground and seem to find the mud no handicap.
There scoring success was largely due to a new centre forward, Wilson, who was on trial. Wilson come from the north. He scored four goals – the first, third, for and face. The second was scored by Wressle, Meikle got the sixth with a penalty kick and Twell the seventh near time
Briggs got Mexborough’s goal just after the start of the second half.
