Good “Old ‘Uns
Mexborough Amateurs’ match report this week features Jim Sapey (picture), veteran inside-left and captain.
Jim’s four goals on Saturday enabled the Amateurs to bring back two points from their visit to Wath Athletic. After Eddie Hambrey had opened the scoring after only two minutes, the rest of the game was a personal triumph for Jim.
Sapey, who has been well known in junior football circles for the past fifteen years, is by no means an “old man” and is still as good as many a youngster.
Jim is a great asset to the Amateurs and his cheerfulness on and off the field is a big inspiration to the team.
Playing alongside Jim is another “old hand.” Walter (“Dixie”) Whithead.
These two grand old footballers have been playing together for close on eighteen years.
Ask them if they have thought of retiring from the game and their answer will be “Our time will come to retire only when we are tired of playing,” and that, I think (writes secretary D. H. Wellings). will be a long time yet. Even then, there are other posts waiting for these two grand stalwarts.
