Beresford

Cricket enthusiast heard with regret of the death on Saturday and Mr Herbert Beresford (86) of Ferryboat Ln, Mexborough.

Mr Beresford will be chiefly remembered for his cricket ability and as licensee of the old Golden Flitch Hotel, Bank St, Mexborough.

A Mexborough boy, he was a professional cricketer for six years in Newport, Monmouthshire, but returned to Mexborough in 1880 and took over the Golden Flitch. He played several seasons as professional at Mexborough. He played one year for the old Sheffield Wednesday Cricket Club and headed the bowling analyses. Rowley was his forte. He did not give up the licence of the Golden Flitch until 1925, having held it for 45 years.
