From Pit to Palace

Mexborough Escort of Kings and Queens

20 years old Terence Bywater, former Mexborough miner, swung down from his oars on Tuesday, and contemplated is second Royal procession in less than a week.

Troops Bywater, of the Royal HousehCavalry, was off duty after escorting the King and Queen of Denmark to Buckingham Palace.

Five days before Terence, second of the eight children of Mr. and Mrs. F. Bywater, 14, Dement Terrace, Mexborough, had taken part in the opening procession of the Festival of Britain.

Cavalryman

He was in the saddle for seven hours last Thursday, a member of the Sovereign escort which accompanied the King and Queen from the Palace to St. Paul’s. On Thursday he was in the advance guard of the escort which, again with the King and Queen, met the Danish guests at Victoria Station.

At 6ft. 3in. and 12 stones, Terence is ideally suited to the Cavalry. Because of that size he was not so useful in Manvers Main Colliery, where he worked for a few year; after leaving Adwick Road Modern School, Mexborough. Before joining the Cavalry a year ago he was also working in a Mexborough shoe shop.

He is in the Cavalry for 12 years, and may continue in the service when his time is up. It is a “fine life” he says.

When he volunteered, which he always said he would do at 19, he applied for the infantry. He was not accepted, and went instead to the Royal Household Cavalry, although he had never had any experience of horses before. He still does much of his duty in the footguards, however.
