Fair Ground Theft.
Kindness Ill Repaid.
Evelyn Ryles (18), domestic servant, pleaded “ guilty ” at Doncaster on Friday to stealing from a caravan at Mexborough, clothing, value £1, the property of Charlotte Tuby, wife of Arthur Tuby, amusement caterer, Doncaster.
Supt. \linty said that on January 12 the girl visited this the feast ground at Mexborough and asked Mrs. Tuby if she could find her work, as she had no home and nowhere to go. Although the girl was a stranger, Mrs, Tuby took pity on her; found her a job, food, a place in which to sleep, and pocket money. She slept in a caravan where Mrs. Tuby kept her clothing.
On January 23 Mrs. Tuby found that certain articles were missing, and that the girl had disappeared. A warrant was taken out, and the girl was traced to Leeds, where the property was recovered. She made no reply to the charge.
The Superintendent said he found that the girl was, to a certain extent an object of pity. She had lost her mother, and her oh surroundings had not been quite satisfactory. Her excuse for leaving Mrs. Tuby’s employ was that she got tired.
In reply to the Magistrates’ Clerk (Mr. E. W. Pettifer), the girl said she took the articles so that she could have a. change of clothing. She said she had no home, and had been travelling in caravans.
The Chairman (Mr. J. Dymond) said she would be remanded in order that further inquiries might be made with a view to doing something for her.
Defendant was again brought before the magistrates on Saturday, and was bound over and put under the care of the Salvation Army.
