Mexborough Turn the Tables

Mexboro’ secured ample revenge on Saturday for their dismissal by Elsecar from the “Times” Cup competition.

Elsecar batted first, but fared badly on an easy-paced but drying wicket.  When only 11 runs had been scored, Wrightson and Jackson were dismissed in three balls from Iggo, and then followed a battle for runs.  Elsecar had their backs to the wall; Mexboro’ were on their toes and gave a splendid fielding display.  Woolley and Bamforth looked like pulling up the score until the latter was smartly stumped by Bamforth.  Woolley and Green were the outstanding batsmen but had greatly contrasting styles.  Woolley being quiet in comparison with Green.

The Elsecar innings lasted near 2 ½ hours and White was Mexboro’s most successful bowler, having 3 for 36, while Bowman had 1 for 9, Iggo 2 for 34, and Ambler 2 for 42.

Mexboro’ had the runs knocked off in less than 90 minutes.  After Broadhead had gone at 15, Brown and White had a merry knock, putting the score to 62 before White was smartly caught by Woolley.  Four wickets had fallen when 138 runs were on the board and then Brown, attempting the winning hit, placed the ball in Wrightson’s hands.

The Elsecar field was very slack while the bowling appeared to have little sting.  Of the five bowlers tried, Green had the best figures with 2 for 24.
