Election Address – J Guest

April 1932

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 1st April 1932

Ladies and Gentlemen,

My term of office as your Representative on the U.D. Council having expired: I have again, “at the request of a large number of ratepayers and Citizens,” great pleasure in offering my services as a Representative of the People. in the forthcoming Election, having served you for the last three years, and feel sure that I have justified the confidence placed in me.

RATES. — When you elected me, the rates were 8/10 now they are 7/8.

WATER – A 24-hour supply is now available, thanks to the Ludwell Springs Scheme; but it is vitally necessary that this source of supple be safeguarded against pollution by cesspools, caused by housing or quarrying, etc. I shall continue to give my special attention to this matter.

ALLOTMENTS – I have been Chairman of the Allotments Committee for the last three years, during which time I have purchased Schofield Street Allotments, assuring the allotment-holders security of tenure. The Allotments are now a credit to Mexborough. I shall continue to acquire land so that ALL allotment holders will have security of tenure, as these willing workers MUST be helped.

HOUSING – More are still needed. I was able to get some more land at 6 1/2d per yard, which is LESS THAN HALF THE PRICE paid for other land by the Council for housing, and arrangements are now in hand to commence building forthwith.

CONVENIENCES – The town still needs Conveniences at the West End. I have done my level best, and if re-elected will make this my first consideration. I shall do my utmost to remedy this crying evil.

ELECTRICITY – I consider that the time has arrived that we should have a more DEPENDABLE Service.

BOOTS FOR BAIRNS – To encourage the Council to arrange a Monster Whist Drive this Fund I offered “Olympia” absolutely free (date fixed for 4th September, 1931), and agreed to finance the effort up to £50 so that there would be no financial loss: owing to lack of interest on the part of others, the scheme did not materialise.

UNEMPLOYMENT – New Industries are needed, and I shall do all in my power to encourage them. MORE industries MEANS MARE TRADE, and LESS UNEMPLOYMENT. I claim to be the Largest Ratepayer among the candidates asking for your votes at the Election. and have no axe to grind. Your Influence and Vote is Solicited by,

Yours faithfully,

J GUEST
