South Yorkshire Times, April 25, 1942
Editor of the ” South Yorkshire Times “
The Directors of the “South Yorkshire Times ” Printing Co., Ltd., have appointed Mr. S. C. Hacking, News Editor for the last six and a half years, to be Editor of the ” South Yorkshire Times ” series.
Mr. Hacking in 1935 succeeded Mr. H. E. Elliott, now Public Relations Officer and Advertising Manager to Messrs. Newton, Chambers and Co., Ltd., who maintained regular contributions to the editorial feature page, which have been widely appreciated and which, under growing pressure of other important and responsible work, he has now discontinued.
A warm tribute was paid to Mr. Elliott for his long service by Mr. W. P. Turner, Managing Director, on Tuesday at a gathering in honour of Mr. E. S. Bardsley, reported elsewhere in this issue, when he also announced that the Directors had decided to invest Mr. Hacking with full editorial responsibilities.
An old pupil of Mexborough Secondary School, where he was head boy in 1927, Mr. Hacking received his practical training in journalism on the “South Yorkshire Times,” and subsequently studied at King’s College, London University, where he obtained the Diploma in Journalism, the only academic qualification specifically designed for the profession. He re-joined the “South Yorkshire Times ” in 1930, and became Sports Editor a few years later, and News Editor in 1935. He is well known in South Yorkshire sporting circles, having played football for Mexborough in the town’s Midland League days, and lawn tennis for Yorkshire for several seasons in the period prior to the outbreak of war.
