Drowning Rescuer

April 1929

Mexborough and Swinton Times April 12, 1929

Redvers Melbourne, 38, Dolcliffe Road, Mexborough, who made a plucky but unavailing attempt to rescue a drowning woman from the canal at Mexborough last Saturday.

He recovered the woman alive from the canal, but she died later. The circumstances are reported elsewhere.

At the inquest, Mr. Melbourne, who is 28 years of age and is employed by the Mexborough U.D.C., was warmly commended by the Coroner for his gallantry and the circumstances are to be reported to the Royal Humane Society. This is the second attempt at rescue from drowning that Mr. Melbourne has made.

About 13 years ago he pulled a boy out of the Don at Mexborough, but in that instance, too, his gallantry was of no avail.
