Death of Mr. J. Sutton
Severs Century-Old Link with Mexborough

The death of Mr. John Sutton (71), occurred on Sunday at his home, 71, Harlington Road, Mexborough. Mr. Sutton was a member of a very well-known Mexborough family.
Only 18 months ago, Mr. Sutton, with his brother Mr. Charles Sutton, who died early this year, relinquished the tenancy of Manor Farn, Mexborough, which had been held without a break by the Sutton family since 1819. Like his brother, Mr. John Sutton was a bachelor and had spent over 60 years in farming operations on and about Manor Farm. He was a well-known personality in the town and district and had also many acquaintances among the farming fraternity in the Doncaster area
He was the owner of considerable property in Mexborough and was a member of the Parish Church and in his younger days, a keen follower of local football and cricket.
The funeral took place on Wednesday at Mexborough Cemetery, following a service in Mexborough Parish Church.
The Vicar, the Rev. E. H. P. Rawlins, officiated and the coffin was borne on a farm dray drawn by one of Mr. Sutton’s former farm horses. “Barney” formerly sheep dog at Manor Farm, walked in the cortege.
