Death of Mr. E. T. Smith.
The death occurred on Wednesday night of Mr. Edward Thomas Smith, of Bleak House. Mexboro’. Mr. Smith, who was 76 years of age, had lived in Mexboro’ about 60 years, and was justly esteemed and respected in the neighbourhood.
He was in early years a bank clerk, and later want into business as a pottery manufacturer, acquiring an interest in the old Don Pottery at Swinton, now defunct.
In later life he was for some twenty years a commercial traveller. His wife died six years ago, and since then he has been in very feeble health.
For many years he was closely identified with the Mexborough Parish Church for ten years as organist and choirmaster, and for a further ten years as warden, in association with the late Mr Edward Smith Waddington, these gentlemen being in charge of the Church restoration in 1891.
He was a close personal friend of the late Robert Glassby, the eminent Mexborough sculptor.
Mr. Smith was deeply interested in public affairs, but never served on any public body, though he was at one time president of the local Unionist Association.
He leaves two sons and two daughters.
The funeral takes place at Mexboro’ Cemetery on Saturday at 2 p.m.
