Licensee and Former Cricketer

The death occurred on Monday of Mr George Leslie Machin (62), at his home, the Old Masons Arms, Main Street, Mexborough. Mr Machin leaves a widow and three married children.

Mr Machin had been the licensee of the Old Masons Arms for about eight years, and had previously been the licensee of the Union Inn, Mexborough.

Kilnhurst born, Mr Machin was well-known in Yorkshire Council Cricket. He played for Kilnhurst in his early days, and on moving to Derbyshire played for Langley C.C.

Mr Machin was a fine wicket-keeper and gave good service to 3 local clubs, Wath, Swinton and Mexborough. He played in the Swinton Yorkshire Council team till about 1936, then played for two seasons with Mexborough.

1942 Mr Machin became the licensee of the Union Inn, Mexborough. Up to about two years ago, he had been vice president of the Mexborough Licensed Victuallers Association.

In the 1914-18 war, Mr Machin served with the R.A. and was wounded in Greece.

When his playing days were over Mr Mason continued his cricketing connection as groundsman of Mexborough Athletic C.C. He was a member of Swinton Bridge W.M.C.

One of his daughters, Mrs Jessie Croft is in Johannesburg, South Africa. His other two children Roy and Marion, both live in Mexborough. In 1944, Roy won the D.F.M.
