Conisbrough Red Cross Show
Attracts Big Holiday Crowd
Outstanding among district Holidays at Home attractions was Saturday’s Red Cross Agricultural show at Conisbrough. Spaciously sited on the Miners’ Welfare Ground, the show presented a notable improvement on last year’s venture, drawing a total of 1,150 entries. By very early afternoon the number of visitors had exceeded the total present last year, and at the peak period nearly 6,000 were on the ground. Although no definite figure is yet available, the Show Committee have realised their aim of doubling their last year’s figure of £239. The final figure will be in the region of £700.
Huge Pig
Perhaps the most amazing exhibit was to be found among the 26 entries in the pig show, where the prize for the best in show went to a massive 68-stone animal owned by Mr. J. Parkes of Braithwell. Best member’s pig (Conisbrough Pig Club) went to D. Firth. Largest entry was in the rabbit show (340, both fur and fancy classes being well patronized. J. Adamson (Conisbrough) dominated the fancy section, taking in addition to a first in the grand challenge adult and third in the grand under five months, five firsts, one second, three thirds and three reserve prizes. In the fur classes R. Goodall (Rotherham) took five first, two seconds, two thirds and two reserves. Other successful exhibitors were F. Jackson and Son (Conisbrough), B. Walker (Mexborough) Beverington (Manchester), H. Chapman (Grimsby), Richardson and Race (Maltby), Rushton (Castleford), and E. Thompson (Swinton), whose Belgian hare won the best in show.
The 300 entries in the horticultural show, for which the biggest of the numerous marquees had been on the set aside, were rather short of expectation but some fine exhibits were on view. J. Adamson emulated his success in the rabbit show by taking many prizes. Other chief winners were W. Stocks, F. turner, F. Watson, W. Yeomans and J. Flowers.
More than 330 dogs contested the 50 classes, as compared with 120 last year, providing the judges with a formidable task in the canine show.
For the first time this year a baby show was held, attracting 63 bonny entries.
A vast and varied array of turnouts in which it seems, since the abolition of the basic petrol ration, renewed interest has been taken, took their chances in the ring, animals, and vehicles resplendent after careful grooming. Agriculture horses were first on the scene, and there were also the leapers and jumpers in the gymkhana.
Nine-year-old Peter Kaye, of Barnsley, the youngest competitor, won the heart as well as the applause of the crowd by his masterly handling of his pony to win the child’s leaping class. He was the only competitor to take all jumps clearly in two tours of the field. Miss J. A. McKie proved the best adult jumper by taking first, second and fifth prizes in the open class.
Mr. N. Whittlestone, the organising secretary, had a hard-working band of helpers. The Ladies’ Committee were responsible for refreshments and teas. A bring-and-buy stall under the charge of Mrs. E. Pearson, assisted by Misses R. Dawson, A. Massey and Mrs. Watson, found excellent support and raised £38 11s 6d. The sum of £20 was raised by a competition for a pair of rabbit fur gloves given by F. Jackson and Son (Conisbrough) and £15 by a bottle of whisky. A novel competition prize was for a live 13-stones pig won by Mrs. Arrowset, 39, Atherstone Road, Conisbrough. Mr. T. Shearman (Doncaster) auctioned horticultural produce at the conclusion of the show. Wath Town Band provided music during the afternoon.
Officials of the Show Committee were – Mr. F. Ogley, J. P. (president), Mr. L. C. Hodges (vice-president), Lt. Col. Miller, T. D. (fieldmaster), Mr. C. E. Webster (treasurer). Ring stewards were Messrs. A. Massarella, T. Longdin, W. Briggs, F. Hare, P. Harrison, R. Asher, J. Richards.
The list of patrons as published in the official programme has been supplemented and a complete list will be published shortly.
