Civil Defence Appeal by Mexborough Councillor
Councillor G. M. Hanson, chairman of the Mexborough Urban Council A.R.P. Committee made another appeal for volunteers for all branches of the Civil Defence Services at Wednesday’s meeting of Mexborough Urban Council.
He pointed out that alerts were putting a strain on A.R.P. personnel and said people should come forward to defend their own lives and homes.
” The time has never been more urgent than to-day,” said Coun. Hanson. “If we are called upon to face an ordeal similar to that some towns have faced there will be a job for every man in the town.”
Councillor Hanson also said he had heard of people moving their air raid shelters. This was permissible providing the Surveyor was notified.
Councillor G. Goodacre asked whether people who bought their own shelters were on the plan of shelters which the Surveyor had, and the Surveyor said that if the site of the shelter was notified to his department it would be included on the plan.
Councillor J. H. White brought up the question of immunisation against diphtheria, and appealed to the public to take advantage of this free service which was so valuable.
The Council decided to communicate with the doctors of the town and urge them to cooperate in this matter.
It was decided to send letters of sympathy to Coun. J. Walton and to Dr. J. J. Huey, who are ill.
The Chairman, Coun. J. Harrop, presented a 10 years’ Long Service Medal to Captain Caddick, who, he said, had given valuable service to Mexborough Fire Brigade. The Chairman added that Mexborough needed more men of Capt. Caddick’s calibre, and Coun. G. S. Morley, H. Gough and J. T. Lewis also made appreciative reference to his work.
