Chesterfield Res. 3, Mexborough Ath. 1
The football throughout was of a scrappy nature. Chesterfield deserved their victory. Indeed, they should have won by a much bigger margin, but Weaver who was tried at centre-forward failed to rise to the occasion, and the other forwards finished poorly.
Weaver headed in for Chesterfield after 10 minutes play. Five minutes later a shot from Dawson cannoned off Winstanley into the net and a minute before half-time Dotchin reduced the lead with the goal of the match. He dribbled through the defence, swerved past Dolman, who came out and set in a low, fast shot.
Mexborough had more of the game in the second half and would have scored on several occasions, but for the splendid keeping of Dolman. He saved three almost certain goals. Mexborough also found Poynton and Bowman stumbling blocks.
Towards the end Hales was fouled in the area and Weaver made no mistake with the kick.
