Mexboro’ Well Tested at Chesterfield
Chesterfield 3, Mexboro’ 1
Mexboro’s defeat at Saltergate on Saturday was their first since Denaby beat them to the first of the Christmas ‘Derbies’ at Tickhill Square, and against a side which included a number of players who had seen service with Chesterfield’s League team their performance was by no means a discreditable one.
The work of the backs and the forwards was again outstanding. The halves had a busy time against the speedy Chesterfield attack. Bolan again showed up well as leader of the Mexboro’ attack and he was cleverly supported by Dotchin and Grange, the Rockingham player who showed promise. It was rather a scrappy game with Mexboro’ doing their best work after the interval. Dolman had a good deal to do in the second half and, but for his fine work, Mexboro’ may well have brought back a point for the goal, which gave Chesterfield a 3-1 lead and settled the issue was scored from a penalty. Wilbourne and Winstanley again defended resourcefully and the former gave Gardiner little scope, while Winstanley with a more formidable opponent in Hales to cope with, held his own in most of the duels.
Chesterfield took the lead after ten minutes when Weaver headed in and five minutes later they went further ahead when a shot from Dawson cannoned off Winstanley into the net. Dotchin scored a brilliant goal for Mexboro’, easily the best of the match, just before the interval. He dribbled right through the Chesterfield defence, even alluding Dolman as the goalkeeper came out. Poynton and Bowman did good work in foiling Mexboro’s numerous attacks after the interval, but their good work would have been of no avail without the alertness of Dolman. A foul on Hales near the end resulted in Chesterfield being awarded a penalty which Weaver converted
