Calladine Beaten After Splendid Display.
Percy Calladine (Mexborough) was beaten on points by Andrew Newton (London) in a hardfought and interesting 12-rounds bout at Preston last night. Calladine forced the pace, and in the first round used both hands effectively at close quarters.
In the third and fourth sessions the Yorkshireman appeared the fresher, but Newton was punching well.
In the seventh round Calladine received severe punishment, but managed himself to land two strong blows to the jaw.
Calladine bad lost some his aggressiveness hereabouts; but in the tenth round ho dazed Newton with a tremendous right to the jaw. Newton put his opponent through the ropes in the last round, and Calladine was down for a count of nine.
The Yorkshireman had given Newton his hardest contest at Preston, and, though the decision went against him the crowd cheered him for his splendid display.
