Brothers Fined Total of £200 For Police Assault

D.P.P. Dismisses Their Complaints Against Police

A Barnburgh building contractor, who went berserk in a Mexborough police station, aiming blows at the Inspector in charge, was fined £140 at Doncaster West Riding Court on Friday.

Before the court were Robert walker, aged 23 of Doncaster Road, and his brother, Peter, aged 34, also a building contractor, of Grassmere Close. Mexborough.

Robert was charged with assaulting Inspector Cyril Dilcock. Peter was accused of assaulting a police constable.

They both denied the offences but were found guilty and fined £100 each.

Early Morning

Mr. Ian Pollard, prosecuting, told the magistrates that the offences occurred in the early hours of the morning on October 14th. last year

“The two men were at Mexborough police station in connection with certain offences which have been dealt with previously. They were going through the bailing formalities when Peter Walker remarked about his tie clip being broken earlier in the evening, and this caused Robert to go beserk.

‘Went Mad’

“He attempted to butt inspector Dilcock in the face and went mad, aiming blows at the Inspector said Mr Pollard

He added that Robert had to be handcuffed and while this was being done Peter Walker grabbed hold of one of the policemen by the throat and started throwing punches at him

When both men had been restrained they were taken to Rawmarsh police station and put the cells.” added Mr. Pollard

Tie Clip

Giving evidence Peter Walker said that Inspector Dilcock had broken his tie clip. He added that there had been a scuffle at the police station, but he had not attacked the policeman at any time.

Roper Walker told the magistrates that the Inspector had grabbed hold of him and a policeman had hit him in the stomach.

“At Rawmarsh the Inspector put me in a cell, threw me against the wall and hit me twice in the stomach and once in the face. I never attacked a police officer that night.” he added.

The magistrates were told that official complaints had been lodged with the Chief Constable about the treatment of the two men at Rawmarsh

Allegations against the Inspector and a policeman had been thoroughly investigated but the complaints were dismissed by the Director of Public Prosecutions and no action had been taken.
