Cricket was played under most unpleasant conditions at Brampton, where Mexboro’ were the visitors, drizzling rain falling practically the whole of the afternoon. This did not prevent a thrilling finish, however, Mexboro’ being beaten by one run after a most gallant effort. From an impartial spectators standpoint the result was disappointing, Mexboro’ having done sufficient to earn a point. The way they withstood the wily slow-balling of Crowcroft and the fast deliveries of Hesketh and Denton was a treat to see. This particularly applies to Green and Jeavons. The latter gave a really sound exhibition.
Brampton batted first and made 196. W. Hesketh (picture) a young Barnsley Grammar School boy, who has done well for them this turn, was again prominent. His score of 43 included nine boundaries, and with the ball he took 3 wickets for 25 runs. Hesketh was also smart in the field. W. Evans, 45, also batted well for the winners and E. Hickling made up 30 with 7 boundaries and a couple of singles. E. Mountford put on 46 for the first Mexboro’ wicket and later outstanding men were J. Green 33 not out, Jeavons 25 and Clayton 23.
With the ball. Mountford had the best average with 3 for 45. Brampton tried six bowlers.
