A Thorncliffe Collapse
Thorncliffe lost at home to Wath by six wickets. C. Davis (22) and T. Kay (17) opened the innings for Thorncliffe and put on 38 runs. The fourth wicket fell at 72, and a collapse followed, the innings ending at 96 (5 Stevenson 17). For Wath, D. Brookes took 4 for 16, Beecham 3 for 25 and Fieldsend 2 for 28.
Wath’s first wicket fell at 26, and the second and third at 36 and 38 respectively. The fourth wicket added 32 runs, and the innings finally realised 100 for 6 (D Brooks 25. S Ellis 23, J C Heaton 13. Spence 13 not out). Eric Earnshaw ( Thorncliffe) took 4 for 33.
A Swinton “Procession”
Swinton had their colours lowered for the first time this season on Saturday, the distinction falling to South Kirkby. The left arm medium pace bowling of W. Truswell had much to do with the success. Bowling throughout the Swinton innings he took 9 for 43 in 14 overs, and performed the hat-trick. Swinton had a shock when their opening pair. L. Bedford and W. Broadhead, were sent back at 13, and there was “procession” later, all the side being out for 109. The only men to defy Truswell were G. Barnett and E. Cadman, who each scored 23 and put on 33 for the sixth wicket.
An opening partnership of 84 by L. Town (39), and D. E. Fletcher (49), paved the way to victory for South Kirkby. Town, with the help of W. Pinder (15 not out), carried the score to 110 for two.
Big Hitting in Vain
Figuring as Brampton’s last hope against Mexborough, at Brampton, on Saturday. D. Hughes, their tenth man, contributed a “fireworks” innings of six sixes and two fours in a total of 47. This, however, was not nearly enough to redeem the game, Brampton’s total being 142 against Mexboro’s 187.
- White was the big hitter for Mexborough, his total of 81 Including 13 fours. Tom Hargreaves scored another 40 and also took for 33 J. Wardle took five Mexborough wickets for 90 runs, while Hughes had 3 for 32.
Denaby’s Smart Win
Denaby gained another smart away victory at Doncaster, after the home team had declared at 179 for 8. Doncaster scored slowly, while Denaby went for runs with determination and replied with 181 for six.
Denaby’s chief scorers were Holland (54). Richards (40), Wright (32), Rossington (27) and Cory (17 not out). Doncaster’s double figure men were H. Hayes (35), Jones (28), and Hemmington (28).
