Mexborough Boys Presence of Mind Recognised by R.S.P.C.A.

The presentation of R.S.P.C.A. Humane Certificates to John Sidebotham (11) of Washington Street, Mexborough and Paul White (10) of 60, Bank Street, Mexborough who rescued a dog from the canal at Mexborough in June, was made by Dr. C. X. Ruhen, vice-president of the Mexborough branch of the Society, at the Empire on Tuesday.

Also present were Councillor J.H. White, chairman of the Mexborough Council and father of one of the boys, and Inspector N. Young of the R.S.P.C.A.

Inspector Young introduced Coun. White, who said that the Mexborough branch of the Society was formed eight years ago. At the same time a junior class was formed and John Sidebotham was a member of that class. One of the first steps to be taken in Mexborough was the installation of a lethal chamber. He praised the wonderful work done by Dr. and Mrs. Ruhen, who had given their valuable time to the Society.

He also remarked that some £40 had been sent from the Mexborough branch to headquarters this year This had been raised by flag days and other efforts. He thought that the public realised the wonderful value of the Society. They had shown that understanding by bringing their animals for treatment by a specialist and qualify veterinary surgeons at the animal clinic. He congratulated the two boys on their prompt action and remarked that they had “done the deed without thinking of the personal risk involved.”

Inspector Young and Doctor Ruhen endorsed Councillor White’s remarks and praised the boys for their heroic effort.

On being asked whether they would do the same again, the boys replied that they would. They are both members of the Parish Church troop of Boy Scouts.
