Mexborough Boxer Receives Boxing Colours on Display in Cyprus

24 years old Vincent Molloy, a Lance Corporal with the first Battalion of the Yorks and Lancaster Regiment, is among a dozen army boxers who have received their boxing Colours following a tournament in Cyprus.

Vincent, the son of Mr and Mrs Patrick Molloy, of 2, Glasshouse Lane, Mexborough, joined the army six years ago, leaving his job as a haulage hand at Barnburgh Main Colliery.

“He takes after my brother,” said his mother Mrs Helen Molloy, “He has always been interested in boxing, hand used to belong to a club at Wombwell.”

He gained his course following an opening off-season “preview” tournament at Dhekelia, Cyprus, in preparation for the Open Championship early in the New Year.

Lance Corporal Molloy moved out to Cyprus a year ago, shortly after marrying his wife Yvonne who lives at Mill farm, Whaley Road, Langwith, near Mansfield.

He has two brothers – Patrick, who is also interesting boxing – and Brendan, and two sisters, Maria and Bernadette.

Born in Bolton, and educated at Dearneside secondary school, he moved to Mexborough a few years ago with his parents.

“I don’t know whether he has any ambition in boxing,” Mrs Molloy added, “but he seems to be doing quite well.”
