Best of His Year
Distinction for Mexborough Student

A 21-years-old Mexborough student has been named the “best apprentice of his year” at the Royal Air Force Technical College, Farnborough. He is James Peter Dainty, only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Dainty, of 21, Makin Street, Mexborough.
Peter is now in his sixth year at the college, and has topped his class every term he has been there.
His congratulation as “best apprentice” was made at the college’s speech day on Tuesday, when he was awarded a slide rule by the Minister of Education, Mr. George Tomlinson.
This will be his last year as a student. He is due to leave the college as a trained engineer this summer. From there he hopes to go to the College of Aeronautics and eventually he hopes to become a production engineer. His mother, however, thinks he may be called upon to do his National Service in the meantime.
Peter went to Mexborough Technical School from Adwick Road Modern School, intending to become a draughtsman. He was preparing to go into the offices at Denaby and Cadeby Collieries when it was learned that boys were wanted at Farnborough. Peter replied and got in.
He entered Farnborough as a craft apprentice in the basic skilled grade, and was “promoted” to engineering apprentice a year later. Since then he has gained a city and Guilds certificate in Machine Shop Engineering, and a national certificate of Electrical Engineering.
