Awards for Mrs Boyes
The Many Mexborough and Conisborough friends of Mrs. Boyes would be pleased to notice her success in the musical festival competition at Barnsley last Saturday, when she competed in the two soprano classes, winning the dramatic class and being placed second in the lyrical class. The test piece for the dramatic class was “E’er since the day” (Louise – Charpentier), and in the lyrical class “Love not me for comely grace” (Michael Head).
She received seventy-eight marks in each class, and the adjudicator, Mr. R. McLeod, commenting on Mrs. Boyes’s performance in the rose bowl class, remarked: “She has a lovely voice—one of the most remarkable voices in the festival.”
Mrs. Boyes did exceptionally well at the Mexborough Festival two years ago, when she won the mezzo-soprano class, was well placed in the gold medal class, and with Mrs. Briddon, also of Mexborough, won the female duet class.
Mrs. Boyes has for some years been a prominent member of the choir of the Wesleyan Reform Church, Mexborough, and of the Conisborough Musical Society.
